Lisgaras Lab

Laboratory of Brain Oscillations and Advanced Therapeutics

The Lisgaras Lab studies neural oscillations as they play a fundamental role in brain networks that support higher cognitive functions and complex neural communication. In brain diseases, disruptions in these oscillations are believed to underlie various disease symptoms and serve as indicators of neural dysfunction. Our laboratory focuses on understanding how abnormal oscillatory patterns, particularly in regions critical to memory, such as the hippocampus, contribute to disease progression and symptom manifestation.

To achieve this, we integrate clinically relevant mouse models with human data to investigate the causes of abnormal brain rhythms and evaluate precise therapeutic interventions. Using advanced electrophysiology techniques and neurofeedback protocols, we aim to selectively modulate brain patterns with therapeutic or resilient characteristics in brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy.

Our research has revealed novel EEG signatures operating at ultra-fast frequencies in Alzheimer’s models, which could serve as breakthrough, non-invasive biomarkers for early disease detection. The laboratory is currently supported by funding from the National Institute on Aging to further advance these objectives.

Research Interests

My work is primarily focused on developing novel approaches and biomarkers to help treat psychiatric comorbidities and memory deficits for a range of brain disorders including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and seizure disorders.
