Rao and Nixon Collaborate on Epilepsia Open Piece

Co-authors Drs. Mala Rao and Ralph Nixon, with collaborators from University of Colorado School of Medicine and University of California Davis School of Medicine, publish “Calpastatin, a calpain specific inhibitor, reduce seizures in a mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy” in the June 25 edition of Epilepsia Open. The study demonstrates that transgenic overexpression of calpastatin, the endogenous inhibitor of calpain, reduces calpain activation and lessens seizure burden in the mouse intrahippocampal kainate model, suggesting that inhibiting calpain could be a viable strategy to prevent epilepsy.
