Dr. Abid Hussaini and his Laboratory for Systems Neuroscience of Cognition and Dementia have recently joined the CDR, bringing their innovative research from Weill Cornell Medicine. During his postdoctoral training at Columbia University, Dr. Hussaini investigated how h-channels influence hippocampal place cell activity and spatial memory using HCN1 knockout mice. His later research of entorhinal cortex grid cells sparked a compelling interest in understanding how these crucial neurons deteriorate in Alzheimer’s disease. Since the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex—regions intimately connected through the trisynaptic circuit—are among the first brain areas affected by aging and AD, the Hussaini Lab employs sophisticated aging and AD mouse models to differentiate between age-related memory decline and disease-specific cognitive loss. The lab’s expertise centers on single-unit recording techniques that capture the electrical activity of aging neurons and those impacted by pathological changes. By monitoring trisynaptic circuit neurons in freely moving mice, the team uncovers how neuronal dysfunction translates into cognitive decline. Additionally, the lab harnesses optogenetic and chemogenetic tools to precisely control neuronal firing patterns.
